Cemetery and School
One of the things I love most about Brooklyn is only about 1 mile from our apartment: Green-wood Cemetery, hyphen necessary.
I dragged Hannah here the other day for some much needed walking. This is main gate, also the place where a flock of green parrots has mysteriously made its home.
Hannah was quite taken with the concept of the American Revolution. This is Battle Hill, where the Battle of Brooklyn took place. It was the biggest battle of the Revolutionary War. Some of the headstones are that old.
We paid homage to one of my musical heroes, Leonard Bernstein. Think: West Side Story.
Side note: I had a rare afternoon to myself and decided to check out JP Morgan Library. They had an exhibit on Alice In Wonderland--original drawings, writings, etc. I love the story and I loved seeing all the history.
Other side note: If you are a literary lover and find yourself in Manhattan, I strongly recommend this place. It was some rich guy's old house where he collected original copies of masterpieces like the Gutenberg bible, O Captain My Captain, handwritten music by Mozart and Beethoven and artwork from Rembrandt and others. Not for kids, but I was super impressed.
Overall we love homeschool though we've had some kinks to work out. One is that Leah loves scheduling and predictability, which we haven't been able to provide enough of lately. With my work schedule and trying to cram everything into one day, it was hard to juggle the most important stuff.
One big concern I had was how much screen time the girls were having. And I mean nonstop youtube of family vloggers (Shaytards? Bratayley?! These are actual people!! And I don't care if they cut their hair or go to a ropes course!), or nonstop netflix reruns of really bad made for tv Disney movies.
I decided we would think of ideas that don't include electronics. Then I got real creative and decided to call it "Entertainment Without Electronics" or simple, "EWE". I thought I was hilarious, with the sheep reference and all. NO ONE, INCLUDING JACOB knew that a female sheep was called a ewe. I've failed as a wife and mother.
So I drew one on the white board. And it turned out to craptastically bad that we laughed for a solid five minutes. They started calling it the PU EWE.
We came up with a few ideas about keeping busy without the stupid computer or tv. One of them was 'learn to draw'. Funny.
I took a post-work, empty subway car selfie on my way home. I didn't realize at the time that it would be my second to last day of work. I had to quit to accommodate med school. I'm not happy about this and the loss of income is so far an insurmountable problem. I can't deal.
