Updates n Things

I hope you can see this video of a pole dancer--I was really impressed!

Today marks a monumental milestone in our effort to be New Yorkers--we have moved our stuff out of a storage unit and into the apartment I will now refer in future posts as home. (Translation: Jacob hired a trio of movers from Ukraine, Georgia the country and Russia to move our useless garbage from one borough to another. They did a fantastic job, by the way.)

We live on a semi-busy corner south of Greenwood Cemetery. Here's the building and we are on the ground floor, covered up by those trees. Behind us is the Jewish girls school and on the other side is an Islamic center. Our upstairs neighbors just moved here from Bangladesh and don't understand the appliances or plumbing--including toilet flushing. They also don't understand English.

Here's the larger of the two bedrooms, where we decided the girls can live. I don't know where to even set up their beds.

The living room.

Long hallway right as you walk in--girl room to the right and living room to the right after that.

On the left is some double doors that open up into a laundry room and the doorway on the right is be and Jacob's room. Then the kitchen and bathroom.

Standing by the bathroom and looking at dining room space.

Our TINY bedroom that will only fit our bed and one shelf. Yaaaaaaay.

Everybody, sing with me: "Once there was a brownstone, brownstone, brownstone. Once there was a brownstone small, SMALL, SMALL!" Brownstone refers to a style of row house made out of .... drum roll please.... stone. It's what you see a lot in movies and tv but it's not that special. Brownstones make up most of Brooklyn and parts of Manhattan. The Cosbys lived in a huge brownstone.

You know those motivational speakers and Hallmark cards that say, "Focus on what you DO have instead of what you DON'T have!" Or even worse, Pollyanna's GLAD GAME?!?!

My cynical meter is going off the charts this summer and I'm going to be downright pessimistic and gloomy and give you a list of what my apartment, I mean home, DOESN'T HAVE:

1) air conditioning

2) dishwasher

3) disposal

4) washer/dryer

5) storage

Costco has saved me a lot of headaches this summer and today I even found with free parking!!! I didn't have to pay $6 to park at Costco today!!

Also they had this excellent signage that I'm still trying to figure out:

Here's an example of, "I'm going to take one of those swanky sunset pictures with the rays of sun and it looks all professional!"

And then it's out of focus and splotchy. Sigh. This is a common sight for us--we live in central Brooklyn but pass through Brooklyn Bridge park to get to anywhere else. Somebody needs to come visit me.

Carrie. You are awesome. I have two words for you: bunk beds. And when I say you are awesome, I really mean it. And I'm super impressed that you're giving the girls the bigger room - that's love.

I am so impressed. You found a gem of a place. Truly. My only question is why is it so easy for people from Bangladesh to score apartments and such a challenge for meeeee!?! I am missing something. And the upside to not having an air conditioner...cheaper electric bill...hopefully... and a legit reason for having ice cream in the freezer at all times. Love you and all of your nyc goodness.
