Real Quick

Having the girls home again has been everything I wanted it to be. They are smarter in some ways, scarred in others, and much more open-minded and adaptable than I give them credit for. Today I took them on a long subway ride into Manhattan to find the Cupcake ATM. They took the whole thing in stride--the vast variety of people, the noise, the smells, the rushing and the waiting. It looked like watching two little born and raised New Yorkers. They put me to shame, with my carrying on and on the past two months about litter, heat and weirdos. They even got BORED, which I thought was a wonderful sign of resiliency. They weren't overstimulated or too emotionally caught up in the newness. They were just bored of the ride. I was so happy! They are sleeping peacefully tonight. Leah walks around the house saying, "This place is so cute!" Hannah needs to move her body and specifically requested a park for tomorrow.

I wanted to have a record somewhere of the Broadway show we went to last Saturday. We saw Something Rotten! (punctuation intentional) It was anything but rotten. It was the perfect blend of ragging on Shakespeare, making fun of musicals (like how Enchanted is a Disney movie but it makes fun of Disney movies), slightly edgy without being offensive, and just downright hilarious. We were both surprised at how much we enjoyed the tap dancing numbers. I'm mentioning this because I laughed and genuinely enjoyed myself. And I've only had a few of those moments since we moved here.

This is a terrible picture. The theaters here are so ornate and beautiful. The costumes and set design and music are stunning. Really, it's the best of the best and it speaks to my 'artsy right brain' (quoting my mom there.)

Brian D'Arcy James was the main character. He also did Shrek The Musical. I'm predicting we'll start seeing this guy in tv and other places--he was superb. Jacob wanted to see the actors after the show so we waited outside the theater. I didn't feel like getting signatures but I really benefitted from seeing these stars up close. They are so NORMAL. I love them.

A brief, inconsequential rant:

Broadway actors/actresses are:

Gray hair, no hair, typical body weight, overweight, older than 40, wrinkled, imperfect teeth, refreshingly normal appearances.

Hollywood actors/actresses are:

The opposite.

(rant over)

I can't wait to go see something else!! And if Something Rotten comes your way, you have my seal of approval. Not that you need it.
