The Breakup

I'm sad. I'm going to allow myself one blog post of sad, mournful wallowing. Miami and I broke up. We only lasted one year and no one thought we'd get along as well as we did. I knew all along it was a fling, but that isn't making it easier.

Goodbye, beautiful and clean pool. We were usually the only ones there. The temperature was perfect. Goodbye synchronized swimming routines and elusive mermaid adventures.

Goodbye, invitation to be on a competitive dance team (insert many gut-wrenching tears by Hannah). goodbye teacher who said she has more natural talent and understanding of dance than most people ever acquire.

Goodbye, wildlife. Alligators, birds, raccoons, flamingoes, dolphins, lizards, possums, sea turtles. I never tired of seeing them (except the spiders and roaches).

Goodbye, Florida Keys.

Goodbye, most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen.

Goodbye, banyan trees.

Goodbye, presidential silver medal and invitation to a magnet program. I'm sure the next school will welcome you and you'll find your place there, too. Your hard work and kindness will pay off. I promise.

Goodbye, 2nd and 5th grade. There were too many tears walking home on the last day and they wouldn't let me take a picture.

Goodbye, Biscayne National Park with rocking chairs that overlook the reef. With free admission and manatees. Manatees!

Goodbye, this chair and this pose where I spent hours watching the girls swim. Sometimes I would read. Sometimes I would think. Sometimes I would swim. I stopped caring what my body looks like in a swimsuit.

Goodbye, Disney World class trips.

Uh...I'm teary just reading this. I absolutely love that you fell in love with Miami. You loved her good and she loved you back--what could be better? I know you will feel this way about New York in a year. Dive in and live, live, live. You're amazing!
