The overdue birthday post
I survived the flu! It was touch and go for a while--Leah and I had some pretty fierce fevers for about 8 days. Blech. Right in the middle of it, Hannah turned 4. She really didn't seem to mind that no one in the house had the energy to pull off a birthday.
She opened one gift in the morning. She's been asking for overalls, and can I just say that it wasn't my idea! That comment is for anyone who's known me longer than ten years and understands my 20 year fixation with overalls. Sadly, this fixation only ended a few years ago (when they were way out of style. Now they are coming back in). She's pretty proud of them.
If you know Hannah at all, you understand how particular she can be about her ideas. She's been telling me for weeks that she wanted a big Hello Kitty ice cream cake. The problem is that she actually doesn't like cake, so I thought I'd order the smallest available. IT came back the size of my hand. Mistake #1. It also had no Hello Kitty on it (mistake #2) and didn't have pink frosting...mistake #3. I take full responsibility for the botched cake disaster.
Here is here birthday dinner: choice of hot dog or corn dog, macaroni and cheese, pears. My mom thought the whole thing was so hokey--which it was--so she put all this cheap, processed food on nice platters. Trailer trash food is trailer trash food, no matter how you disguise it! I say that with authority, having lived in a trailer not too long ago.
We dressed up the cake a bit, with a Cricut Hello Kitty and some ribbon I found at Walmart. She still wasn't fooled. I also brought some Cold Stone supcakes to try to offset the ridiculously small cake. That didn't really appease her, either. Honestly, she wasn't that upset and still had a great birthday. But she made up her mind at birth about the way things are going to be and nothing has ever -- or will ever-- change that.
Here's what Leah looks like with a fever of 104.7.
I love this pic! Leah perked up for a bit and bonded with Hannah over her presents. They have a really interesting relationship, fiercely competitive but love each other so much.
4 is a great age because ALL gifts are winners! Here she is sporting some fuzzy slippers from Aunt Jen and her new scooter.
Here's a bit about what Hannah is like right now. She weighs 35 lbs and is 35 inches tall. She loves to spell words, do puzzles, play computer games, eats about 5 things, and likes to help around the house. She loves cuddling with mom and Grandma and playing games with anyone who will agree to it. She is extremely bright, picking up on jokes and complex emotions that Leah doesn't understand. She is also Leah's biggest fan and protector. Hannah wakes up between 4 and 5 every morning and doesn't stop thinking and analyzing until 7 at night. She gave up naps two years ago. She says really funny things but is very sensitive and doesn't want anyone to laugh. I love both of my girls so, so much.
